Khabib vs Gaethje is confirmed in the fight for UFC 253 on September 19, 2020.
Justin Gaethje earned his shot at undisputed champion Khabib when he outclassed and stopped Tony Ferguson to win the interim title at UFC 249.
The highly anticipated lightweight title unification bout between Khabib and Gaethje is expected to headline at UFC 253 on September 19, according to a report from the Brazilian MMA outlet Combate.
Khabib Nurmagomedov just completed Ramadan, a month in which Muslims don’t eat or drink during the hours of daylight.
Most importantly Khabib’s father remains in a critical condition, having fallen seriously ill last month with problems related to the Coronavirus.
Khabib’s father Abdulmanap was placed in a medically-induced coma last month in Moscow after falling ill with pneumonia. The 57-year-old came out of the coma following surgery but was then placed on life support.
There was some good news earlier this week with his manager Ali Abdelaziz saying there were signs of improvement.
Abdelaziz told ESPN that “Khabib is very strong, his family is very strong and also his father is a very strong guy”.
Khabib Nurmagomedov is undefeated after 28 professional fights and is a route to becoming the greatest lightweight champion in UFC history.
He is already considered one of the best fighters to have ever graced the sport.
Khabib last fought at UFC 242 where he disposed of Dustin Poirier via third-round submission, successfully unifying the lightweight titles and cementing himself as the No. 2-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Justin Gaethje has stormed through the lightweight rankings after rattling off four straight stoppage wins over James Vick, Edson Barboza, Donald Cerrone, and Tony Ferguson. ‘The Highlight’ finished all but one of those opponents (Tony Ferguson) via first-round KO and is widely considered one of the most dangerous fighters in the lightweight division.
